although it's unlikely, a small part of me really hopes to hear something from these guys again some time. would be very curious to hear what they would do with a third full-length.

Maybe my tastes have changed since finding this band, but I'm honestly not really liking Riley's vocals here. I kinda wish the singing was a bit more forceful and that there were more growls, rather than the amount of screams he's using. They aren't particularly forceful, either. They sound slightly inhaled, rather than exhaled. At least Riley's kicking ass in Allegaeon, I'd be able to get past the screams if the singing felt a bit more intense and forceful.

y'know, after listening to Under A Western Sun twice, then listening to The Farthest Reaches again, the sound change doesn't sound nearly as drastic... i think it's really the vocals that are the biggest surprise because the instrumentation is pretty close to the same, maybe slightly less technical at times (yet way more technical at others)?

@ mr. sweetness : i see. have checked out "the farthest reaches" and i understand that if that's what you like and expect from the band, you'll be very very surprised and probably even shocked by the new album's added aspects and influences. i hoever approached "under the western sun" without any prior contact and to me it's pretty much perfect cause it scratches about every musical itch i have at the moment all at once and kept growing on me for weeks. but it's surely not for everyone. btw. - the infomercial rocks! @ xvictimofadownx : try "the covenant" by benevolent. i think this might be way more up your alley.

Not feeling the new album unfortunately, I love the ideas and prog more in general than very melodic technical death metal but.....yeah can't get into this :(

this is a pleasant surprise! i was unaware of this band before and quite enjoy the western sun; especially "chorus of the earth". and reading the comments makes me want to check out their previous effort. however i don't get the faceless comparisons on the new material. "autotheism" bored the hell out of me with its weaksauce porcupeth attempts. this is different (clean vocals compliment the songwriting and don't seem artificially forced in as it is with a lot of bands) and yummy.

I was a bit surprised that the new album would be tagged as Tech Death, still yet to hear it, but whatever this is, I like it.

My my some bands are certainly experimenting to the point of being almost unrecognizable. I actually enjoyed this new album but it's nothing like The Farthest Reaches.

Agree with what the49 said, more diversity to it with touches of depth here and there. Beautiful.

Actually, the new album is one of the best albums I have ever heard. Even though it may be a little too long, every song is great and really well written. Not as techinical The Farthest Reaches, but much more diverse and deep. And I don't miss the grows, not at all. The balance between cleans and grows is fantastic, in my opinion.

I like SoA a lot, they are one of the handful of bands who really can do some good shit and still experiment! Even though then new album is not quite consistent, and it has some hard flaws, they prove themselves fully capable of unleashing an album of the year next time. Thumbs up

A Great Liberation seems to be only solid track. Rest of the album doesn't even sound Son Of Aurelius.

After four years, mighty Son Of Aurelius releases new album, i was freaking stoked when i heard A Great Liberation. Clean singing mixed with growling, it ain't bad, but when you realise, every song got clean vocals, it kinda loses it sense for me. The Farthest Reaches > Under A Western Sun is all i had to say. Anyway thank you Son Of Aurelius for the new album!

What's the deal with the clean singing? I mean it's okay if few songs have cleans, but when 80% of the singing is clean, it's way too much. And the cleans don't even sound that good. Damn they should have sticked with the style they had on TFR... Their technicality has also suffered a great deal...

Bandcamp Under A Western Sun: Finally! 72+ minutes worth of superb music! Plenty of guitar riffage with a lot of good melodies running throughout the album. The band does know how to fashion some outstanding techprog metal! |m|

Haven't listened to these guys since my senior year of High School. So nice to rediscover them. The Farthest Reaches is a masterpiece.
