During the mixing sessions for Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, Sonic Youth needed to compose a new song for the DGC Rarities compilation. All they had left in the studio was an acoustic guitar and a bit of a drum kit set up, and they ended up finishing 3 songs (for release). One was "Winner's Blues", a solo Thurston Moore composition that they liked so much they added to the album's tracklist.
