So underrated. All the songs that people consider filler are actually some killer Soundgarden gems sprinkled throughout an awesome album. Like Tighter and Tighter, Switch Opens, Boot Camp, ETC. Time to give these songs the light of day!

I thought this album was great when I first heard it, back when it was released (yup, I'm that old). I still think it's amazing today. I remember it getting a whole lotta hate and I have no idea why.

I think I like this album more than Superunknown. At least this one has got more standout tracks to me than Super, but Super might have a slight edge as being more consistent as a whole. Tighter & Tigher, Overfloater, Pretty Noose, Applebite, Blow Up The Outside World, Rhinosaur, Burden In My Hand... So many great songs on here.

This album doesn't get enough love. It's not THAT much worse than Superunknown. I like the overall vibe they capture here. It's got a cool Led Zeppelin esque sound. Has some filler but also plenty of killer. Blow Up The Outside World is truly incredible. Switch Opens is slept on but is amazing as well. Zero Chance is calming. It's definitely their worst album since the debut, but this is Soundgarden we're talking about here. This album is very much worthy. King Animal was god awful compared to this.

This one's always seemed like a letdown after Superunknown to me. It's certainly not a bad record and there are plenty of good songs here, but it really feels like every minute of it's hour and 5 min. runtime, whereas with Superunknown I never get bored or antsy. Somewhere after "Never the Machine Forever" everything just kind of starts to blend together. Still, some of these songs are among the best they ever did ("Pretty Noose" is one of my absolute favorites, plus I love "Ty Cobb" and "Rhinosaur").

interesting. maybe revisit only the second part of the record, without listening to the first part. or at least, give overfloater and tighter & tighter as a combo a chance - more than a few people i've talked to agree that those two listened to one right after the other prove to be one of soundgarden's highlights. also, most people who've ended up liking this record always speak of incredible payoff of sticking with this album through the initial disappointment. i remember this being my most listened to album on my old account with well over a thousand scrobbles. but i agree, it is a more demanding experience than superunknown.

I've begun to like it a bit more in recent times. "Tighter & Tighter" has become one of my favorites along with "Switch Opens," so having those two to look forward to helped inspire me to want to listen to it the full way through more often

Don't sleep on the back half of the album. Switch Opens is one of the best on the album and Overfloater is pretty awesome as well.

I've come around to it a bit in the time since I made my initial comment. And I am definitely a "Switch Opens" convert! Also really love "Tighter & Tighter" now

I love this album, but it has the same issue that Superunknown does. It simply has too many songs. They could have cut out Applebite, Never Named, and No Attention. Having 16 songs with several filler really bogs down an otherwise great record.

Agree with Never Named but not Applebite and No Attention. Applebite changes the atmosphere brilliantly. Plus is a great build up to Never the Machine Forever! And No Attention fucking rocks!

Can't believe I've overlooked this album for so long. Amazing album and up there next to Superunknown and Badmotorfinger.

First off I'd like to say this is my 2nd favorite Soundgarden release after the Screaming Life (EP), Now to my point: The reason Soundgarden broke up was, although Kim Thayil loved Superunknown, he felt Down on the Upside didn't have enough metal roots to it, although now the album grew on him, back then he despised it. On the contrast Chris Cornell, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd all felt it was a great achievement and wanted to make the band's sound EVEN less metal and more alternative rock than Superunknown. This lead to Thayil only contributing to 1 song on the album ("Never the Machine Forever") Eventually Cornell, Cameron, and Shepherd wanted to make their next album even less metal etc. Eventually the band broke up due to Thayil being pissed that Soundgarden was mellowing out therefore refusing to contribute. Luckily when they reformed for King Animal they decided to make the heavy at least as heavy as Down on the Upside, pleasing all 4 members.

Down on the upside has a cool album cover. I was told to tell this story as well. There was a lady who was tipped 12.53, The on high saw the engaged couple like the King and Queen 1 and 2 weighted chess pieces 5 was the holy person like a bishop and 3 was like the crown prince, the story was sent back through time and a royals mostly prime number marriage was one mill 253 thou, the over 18 lady who received the tip also had a nicely funded wedding. These charitable acts of Queen Noor are in a special book part offworld diplomatic book with quotes from the Holy Qu'ran

Down on the Upside charted top ten. The more I listen to the singles the more I like them. I was told to tell this story. There was once a family from the Indian subcontinent and the engaged couple looked at a modest ring. On the day of the wedding the wife received a ten thou ring and asked how we looked at a modest ring? The Husband said Queen Noor helped with oil revenue sharing true story. Cousin Queen Noor charitable acts are well known to friends. Today I was given honest advice that I agree with.
