Sometimes a song just grips you for reasons you can't explain. It's not particularly catchy, the lyrics aren't particularly great, the musicianship isn't particularly impressive, it's not especially "danceable," there's nothing about it that makes it seem special, but nonetheless it takes hold of you and becomes an obsession. For me one such song is and has been for years Spacemen 3's take on the Bo Diddley song "It's Alright," presented here in an 8 minute version that I wish were 2 or 3 times longer. Something about that song has gripped me since the day I heard it and many years later shows no signs of letting go. It's really just a repetitive, minimal groove with only a few lyrics and fairly poor fidelity, but it becomes hypnotic and irresistible here in the context of these other lo-fi demos from '85-'86. I like several other Spacemen 3 records better than this one, but none has a song I love as much as "It's Alright."

By the way, the original is called "I'm Alright," and can be found on several Bo Diddley recordings. I recommend his great live album "Bo Diddley's Beach Party," which includes that track and many other awesome songs given great, raw performances. The Rolling Stones did a version of it on their live/"live" album "Got Live if You Want It!" as well. No other version has quite grabbed me like this one by Spacemen 3, personally, but your mileage may vary.

Hey man, 2+ years late on this, but this was THEE track that hooked me. This was the first album I heard by them way back in high school in the late 90s. I bought it for the title alone, and this was the one that made their whole repetitive sound click. At the time, I was a SxE hardcore kid, but I was also deep into the Sonic Youth wall-of-noise thing, and this one seemed to tap into that energy the most. I do have that Rolling Stones album, and I remember upon first listing to it, thinking "Ah! The Spacemen 3 song!" and then finding out Bo Diddley did the original (though I always suspected it a cover). Over the years Come Down Easy has become my favorite of theirs (especially the version on this album), but I think your first comment captures my initial feelings upon first hearing it! Cheers!
