Biography
SPIRIT WAS is Nick Corbo & Company, a rock and roll group in New York City, performing original material. Presenting original artwork: recordings, illustrations, prints, and distortion pedals for electric guitar and bass.
Over the last decade Nick Corbo has produced a prolific body of work as a musician and illustrator. As a student at SUNY Purchase in 2010, alongside early iterations of acts like Porches and Sheer Mag, Corbo began writing, performing, and contributing to various musical projects. Before graduating, he played fundamental roles in bands Crying and LVL UP, and toured professionally across the US and Europe. Corbo recorded a catalogue of albums with both projects, working especially with budding indie label, Double Double Whammy in New York. During that time Corbo was also working on a persistent portfolio of illustrations, notably a large collection of hand made and individually illustrated electric guitar pedals initially funded by a successful kickstarter campaign in 2013.
When his primary music project, LVL UP, stopped working together in 2018, a year into promoting their third LP and first release on Sub Pop Records in Seattle, Corbo began writing new songs and performing regionally with a new band. The band, along with all of Corbo's visual projects and guitar pedals, were collectively named Spirit Was. In the fall of 2020 Corbo signed Spirit Was to Danger Collective Records and started recording a studio album, eager to work with the label to share a new collection of songs and artwork. Corbo is producing his most powerful music to date, taking his intricate home demos and developing them into pummeling metal-inspired studio recordings. His debut full-length album as Spirit Was is scheduled for release in 2021 on Danger Collective Records in Los Angeles.
