Whatever you know or think you know about Stephen Stills' music, you will find it in his first solo album, "Stephen Stills". From raucous liberal lifestyle (Love The One You're With) to Delta Blues (Go Back Home, Black Queen), to heartfelt ballads (Do For The Others, Church, To A Flame) to activist pushing (Cherokee, We Are Not Helpless), this is Stephen Stills and he has been consistent come what may.

Significant sidemen appear on Go Back Home (Eric Clapton) and Old Times, Good Times (Jimi Hendrix), not to mention David Crosby and Graham Nash on Love the One You're With. The slam on the original vinyl in 1970 is that Stills kept his celebrity sidemen (Clapton and Hendrix) in the background behind his own guitar work. Remastered CD versions show a balance or that Clapton and Hendrix's work is now as up front as possible on the recordings and it is very good. It is said that Old Times, Good Times was the last studio recording done by Hendrix but this lacks verification.

By this time in his career, Stills had achieved success with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and (sometimes) Young, and had been part of the Super Sessions with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. So, his first solo album was not a matter of "if" but "when" and it was reflective of its creator. Unlike his counterpart, Neil Young, Stills hasn't found a need to re-invent himself with every new musical wave. With Stills, you get a little bit country, a little bit blues and a little rock'n'roll, with a ballad now and again. That helps make his first solo album stand up so well even in 2009.
