First things first: Those drums. They're not first temporally (we hear keyboards and bass first), it's true; but once they appear, they're first sonically and emotionally. Their percussive, impossibly deep, thumps--loud enough to demand attention, just soft and repetitive enough not to devour the entire song--set up an unbridgeable gulf between the high and low pitches at the song's center. Drums plumb the depths of the lows, a flute melody explores the giddy highs, and never the twain shall meet. Imagine a flautist playing an impromptu concert on a train station, with a nearby locomotive engine chugging along and providing accompaniment. That's kinda what this sounds like. Kinda. Once you get past the gorgeousness of the flute and the hypnotic qualities of the mechanical drum sound, the intrigue is in the spaces between the contrasting pitches--in the ways other instruments seek to fill them, and in the moments when it seems the highs and lows just might colesce.
