i didn't say he wasn't. i don't have to be his friend, but i do connect with what he said and evoked in his art. i am under no delusion about separating the art from the artist, which i have never understood to be possible. i don't feel like cutting myself off from art that is meaningful to me because the person who made it (and thus the art itself) is less than pure. i would much rather sit with the momentary discomfort that comes with the realization that this man who has hurt people is on the other hand capable of making music that touches me deeply. 'good people' (there are very few of those) don't have a monopoly on humanity. to believe they do is tantamount to some kind of calvinist reprobate nonsense.

Everything needs to be melancholic, sad and mopey or people say the song is a miss if your name is Mark Kozelek. Nothing happened, this is the way he feels about his dad ffs. Like most kids from similar backgrounds like where he grew up in Ohio, you get disciplined by your dad and nurtured by your mother.

every time you cringe to this song, your own dad secretly wishes you hadn't been born
