the tags are absolutely retarded on this and the other Swans gothic rock and neofolk releases... I mean alternative rock.. really?

I get why Gira might be unhappy with this if it doesn't sound the way he wanted it to. But I don't get how critics can listen to it and agree it's a bad album.

Wonderful album. I think in terms of Folk Rock / Gothic Americana things Angels of Light probably outdo it, but for the first album where Gira really tried to completely redefine Swans' identity (I'd argue CoG still has plenty of ties to earlier works) I think he really succeeded. This and Ten Songs for Another World really deserve their flowers.

Soundtracks, world of skin, children of god and this are probably my faves, the presence of Jarboe makes the atmosphere even more unique, mysterious and intimate

their best album. surprisingly beautiful and melodically competent for a band known for harsh, uncompromising music.

I expected to hear some disturbing and horrible pieces of music and what I got? One of the most charming and beauitiful dark-folk record ever

It actually is good in its own way, it's just different from all these you've mentioned, I love it not less than others

wow this doesn't suck. hearing pretty unanimously that this is their worst kind of sets it up to fail. but I'm actually pretty satisfied with it

Neofolk has a very specific definition and I don’t think Swans qualify. I have this album labeled in my iTunes as “gothic Americana”.

Absolutely gorgeous record. It's nice to see some love for this, it's easily the most underrated album in their discography.

Great songwriting, weird singing, good performances, kind of weird arrangements, great atmosphere ... a mixed bag alright but I sure love listening to it.

I think it's a great album. Part of what makes Swans the band that it is is the incredible variation between time periods and releases. As they matured, Swans consistently made music with the intention of reaching a larger audience. I think Gira regrets the extent to which they tried to cash in on this era of music, but the album itself is still good. The River, Mona Lisa, A Universal Emptiness, and God Damn the Sun are all tracks on the same caliber of creativity as anything Swans did in its early years.
