I once read an interview with Gira (I believe) during the making of this album. He talks about driving in his van and playing the Bob Dylan album, “Blood on the Tracks” religiously. He talks about pulling over his van once and just sobbing while that album played. This album sounds exactly like that. A guy having a bleak and violent existential crisis to Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks”.

The original album mix sounds much better than the remaster to me... plus several songs are longer and have more developed fade ins/fade outs. I wish Gira was less self critical but I suppose that's something we all struggle with

It's hard to call what's on streaming services "a new mix". Gira simply lost the original master of this album and reassembled it with the alternative mixes from the "Various Failures" compilation, which he still had.

Possibly the best way to start listening Swans, the only bad thing is that you may develop dysthymia

My favorite Swans album. I don't understand why I never see this on any "greatest albums of all time" lists. But well, those lists are usually trash

Miracle of Love is absolutely a post rock staple. Reminds me of Nick Cave's "Stranger than Kindness".

As someone who recently got into Swans, this has probably been the most immediate album for me. Definitely NOT a failure, great songwriting, arrangements and production.

It's interesting to hear these proto-post-rock parts in some of the songs here, considering that the album was released in 1991. The buildup and climax of Will We Survive, the endings of Failure and When She Breathes, etc... the climax of You Know Nothing is basically proto-GY!BE.

try actually being correct next time before deciding to get snarky for no reason? listen to EXTRACTIONS by DIF JUZ, it’s totally post/math rock, tainted only by Robin Guthrie’s mismatching 80s dream pop production.

you know nothing! the second half is just as great if not better than the first one. Why Are We Alive is the best song on the album in my opinion, and Miracle of Love is also a very deep, emotionally hitting song. When She Breathes is underrated too.
