"Helpless Child" is a 15:47 long epic off the album Soundtracks Of The Blind. The song starts lethargic and atmospheric, with surrealistic lyrics. The song develops in the latter half, building more and more instruments up.
Michael Gira has never confirmed the exact meaning of the song, but a few different interpretations exist.
One is that the song probably is from the point of view of a fetus inside a junkie mother’s womb, that has it’s gestation destroyed by drug and alcohol use. The building at the end can represent the gestation itself, and the song collapsing can symbolize a miscarriage.
