Biography
With songs born in the desert and shaped in the city, Tecoma’s sound defies easy categorisation. Tecoma seamlessly combines styles as jarring and disparate as country, jazz and roots music, with drum n bass rhythms, spaghetti western themes and sampled beats. Labelled everything from ‘post trip-hop’ (Rolling Stone) to ‘alternative roots music’, at the heart of Tecoma’s sound is a deeply compelling song writing talent and an utterly distinctive voice. Once heard this music stays with you.
Amira Pyliotis, the musician behind the moniker Tecoma, first discovered performance on trumpet at age 11 after falling in love with Louis Armstrong. Growing up in Melbourne, Amira performed in any number of lo-fi, jazz, blues, roots and rock outfits, before a move to the desert of Central Australia prompted her to focus her attention on her new solo incarnation, Tecoma.
