Good debut, but I prefer their next two albums. They sound like they've never been in a studio before on this one, kind of sloppy.

Perfect from start to finish! The only Testament album I truly like. I'm probably not alone either. I'm sure there's several others who only like this album by Testament.

Louie Clemente was a powerhouse on this one. I wonder why he lost his "creative steam" on subsequent albums featuring him.

I guess the interview was from around the release for 'Dark Roots Of Earth'. I haven't really listened to Testament since that one. But I think it's important not to misunderstand the context. Eric Peterson didn't imply that Lou Clemente was a bad drummer, just that his drumming on the older albums wasn't up to par with beasts like Lombardo, Bostaph or Hoglan. I interpreted it more as Louie's drumming not serving the older songs as well as it could have done, in retrospect that is. But Clemente's drumming from 'The New Order' and onwards was rather one-dimensional indeed, even if he still was a tight and intense powerhouse. Any Testament album after his departure is just a whole nother level regarding the drumming.

I did a quick Google search but couldn't find the interview (that fast anyway). I mean, Eric Peterson's done hundreds of interviews. It's a needle in a haystack. But I did, however, find another interview from around the reunion shows circa 2006 or so. Eric Peterson didn't "criticize" Clemente's drumming but he did say, regarding the addition of Bostaph on 'The Formation Of Damnation', something along the lines of Clemente not "being able to play this stuff anyway". Apparently Lou quit playing drums altogether after leaving Testament in the early 90's, but Eric Peterson clearly doesn't seem to hold high regards for Clemente's drumming or skills these days.

LMFAO They did not go down the path of Metallica you drop kick. This album is great but The New Order is better.

I wish Testament had made more albums like this before going down the path of Metallica. Classic old school thrash. So much energy.

Incredibly strong album, especially for a debut. The songs have thrashing speed from the start of the album til the very end. The song structures are actually very well written. Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick play dual parts together very well. No filler on this record. IMO, Testament has written many great albums, but this is the only completely cohesive album with no filler until Formation of Damnation, and Dark Roots of the Earth (which are also very cohesive). The New Order is an ass kicking follow up album, but has some filler.

I will admit that the first couple times i listened this album i was like "Yeah, it's good, but definitely not as good as the praise it gets". But with each listen after that the album grew on me very much and now my opinion is definitely much more positive. Without a doubt the best Testament album.

Testament's first masterpiece, a magnum opus which should be in any thrash-loving persons personal collection. No excuses, once you're in, you won't come out!
