Biography

Hailing from the slums and ghettos of New Zealand (the Prague of the South), The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band play a unique brand of highly theatrical East-European Apocalyptic Debauchery… Expect spontaneous combustion in the audience, clothes thrown off in frivolous rampage, macabre stories, legs turning into snakes, much musical and physical inebriation and dancing, dancing, dancing… When Balkan, Punk, Cabaret and Swing combine, nuclear meltdowns of worlds begin…

The Album, Polkapocalypse, is done. World Domination is just around the corner… The brothels shall be the parliament, the graveyards the Houses of Commons…. A new era is upon us…

After first emerging from an alleyway behind Auckland's Wine Cellar sometime in the May of the 2006, the band has gone from enigma to sensation. In April 2008, the band released their first ep, Danse Macabre, which spent several months in the Independent NZ top 40, while the riotous, energetic video for the single, 'The Dance of Death', was in the top five most watched videos on Amplifier.co.nz for over a year. In this time the band has completed two highly successful nationwide tours, played at most of the country's biggest summer festivals, performed at AK09, the country's biggest international arts festival of 2009, played in "The Famous Spiegeltent", and opened for American band Beirut… After 6 months in Western Europe, playing to ravenous audiences, the band is back in a burning New Zealand summer. Thery are doing no laurel-resting, however, but are preparing the machine for an international onslaught, delving deeper, further past the apocalypse, into unlit and illimitable corridors of eldritch fantasy…

Polkapocalypse
The new album fully captures the passion, mystery and intoxication of a Benka performance, from frenzied dances to despairing ballads and macabre stories. It contains 4 originals, 4 traditional songs and two covers: ‘The Crack of Doom’ by the Tiger Lillies and ‘Too Drunk To F**k’ by The Dead Kennedys. Seven of the songs were recorded at Black Bridge Studios by Jamie Newman during a hot, steamy weekend in March, while the live experience is captured on three tracks recorded by Andre Upston for Radio New Zealand in May last year. The first single from the album ‘The Crack of Doom’ was soon followed by ‘Polkapocalytptic’. A suitably debaucherous music video has been released for the third single ‘Too Drunk to F**k’ (definitely no government funding here!), and an epic voyage into the depths of the depravity of Benka's mind will be forthcoming at the break of December, in the delerium driven video for 'Polkapocalyptic'.
