This hypnotic, nostalgic masterpiece about lost love was only a minor hit, peaking at No. 67 in the UK and No. 10 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. The song inspired The 1975 on their 2018 single "Love It If We Made It" which lead singer Matty Healy has described as like The Blue Nile "on steroids".
Interest in The Blue Nile, and The Downtown Lights in particular, ramped up dramatically upon the release of Taylor Swift's 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department. Album track Guilty as Sin, which references The Blue Nile and The Downtown Lights, is thought to be about Swift's brief relationship with Healy.
