According to Roger O'Donnell this was based on a musical idea by Lol Tolhurst. The last contribution of his. Beautiful….

Criminal how this wasn't on the original release. Last Dance too. But that's the problem with 70 minute filler-less albums.

This song doesn't have anything to do with actual homesickness. I think the title is actually ironic. It's obviusly a plea to a loved one (hence "cling to me") and my guess is that the narrative told is him and that special someone being in a situation where it's imminent they bid each other farewell. He doesn't want the moment to end, he doesn't want to go home-but he will have to-so enjoying the moment is the most he can get, hence "ispire in me the desire in me to never go home". And even though the "in me" he adds after desire isn't needed from a grammatical standpoint it prolongs his sentence-just like he'd like to prolong the moment itself. Wonderful poetry.
