Established Bay Area band The Even Tide create urgent, organically crafted songs as expansive as any made by long-time big rock demigods.
Their new EP Foundations In Sand is astonishingly self-recorded and produced, and was mixed by Mike Sapone (the studio maestro who has helped capture the stadium shaking roar of Brand New and Taking Back Sunday). Their sound is huge and organic and has an emotional range from the extremely catchy, almost post-punk "No Faith" to the complex and transcendent Even Tide manifesto "Honesty Of Drowning." Chosen from a sixteen song barn-storming oeuvre of fresh tunes, this EP showcases an unusually mature-sounding band capable of delivering the most intimate lyrics in the biggest, boldest musical frame of sound.
"Foundations In Sand," the opening title track, has a serpentine-and-slam paced anthem describing trust in torsion. Vocalist Andrew Deneef snatches you by the collar, cornering you with frankness and passion. From the start, you can tell this band has absorbed big rock sounds from Rush to Circa Survive, Radiohead to The Used.
Deneef's "tough vulnerability" soars through the nimble complexity of guitarists Elliot Polokoff and Jesse Mancillas, whose bantam playing sounds as if they're recording a mammoth classic FM rock album in 2011. Bassist Kit Rairigh's groove-pushing riffs and Morgan McLean's crisp drum rolls are as boldly bottom-ended as their rhythms are tersely paced.
The essential musical elements in The Even Tide combine unfettered, deep with feeling. Reflecting the diversity of their Bay Area-upbringing, it also has the no-BS element of sincere intelligence in every aspect of their songwriting. "Isn’t it funny, that the ones who get close are the ones you fear the most", Deneef sings in the shattering EP closer "Socialphoba." Key track "Honesty Of Drowning" is "about how pride and ignorance can make you a victim when it's not necessary."
The Even Tide chose not to hide behind voice pitch correction and studio tricks to sound "perfect" on Foundations In Sand. "What’s there is there!" the band happily asserts. Even down to the mastering, it was crafted by inspired professional Troy Glessner at Spectre, who is responsible for the awesome wide-screen throb of artists on the Solid State/Tooth & Nail and Atlantic labels (Further Seems Forever, Death Cab for Cutie). "We strive to create unique sounding, high energy, progressive music that can be enjoyed world-wide by any true fans of high quality rock," is the band's mission statement.
The Even Tide is setting up to-tour full time, "sharing our songs with the world – always delivering high energy performances that capture the crowd and take them for a ride".
