Biography

  • Years Active

    2013 – present (11 years)

  • Founded In

    Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

The Hybrid Vine began in 1992 in Glasgow, Scotland, as a band called "Exit" just after founding members John Morrison and Calum Galbraith met. As Exit, they wrote songs about anything and everything, piecing music together as they went. They also learned to play some of Marc Bolan's songs, and that was when things began to get going for them. John had previously in 1990, written a song called "Mercy", which he played for Calum, and Calum added the last verse. The song was now complete. In 2014 the song "Mercy" was played on Rock Radio, presented as a future classic for new upcoming bands, and received positive reviews.
Calum also wrote "Majestic Time," word for word from Bolan's "Nijinsky's hind."

The Hybrid Vine then went into rehearsal studio with no drummer (but always got a helping hand from one of the guys running the studio) and recorded live versions of "Funny How," "Hatred Thru Love," and other early songs which found themselves on a cassette tape in John's attic. Years later, they met up again and decided they wanted to do something with those songs. They did! They released two demo albums, "Majestic Time", followed by "No Strength Left to Hate." In 2013, John changed the name of the band to The Hybrid Vine, as he and Calum were both gardeners.

The Hybrid Vine were at a new beginning. Now having drummer Simon Connor added to the band, and Scott Munro on bass, The Hybrid Vine released their debut album, "No Side Effects" (available on iTunes) on April 1, 2015. They have since released "Bolanesque Boogie" (2016), a CD of Marc Bolan/T. Rex songs, of which proceeds go to The Marc Bolan School of Music in London. They also released a new cd in April 2017, called "Love Loss and the Apocalypse" from which comes the new single "Vacant Star," released on March 1st, 2017.

John Morrison released a solo cd on January 7, 2017, called "Weeping Water," of which 50% of the proceeds go to another Bolan charity, this one in Sierra Leonne, The Light of Love Foundation UK.

The Hybrid Vine have now welcomed Patrick George on Bass, and Simon Connor is back on Drums ( Simon also plays a mean guitar and a sweet mandolin)!

The Hybrid Vine are:

John Morrison - lyrics, vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion
Calum Galbraith - lyrics and odd percussion (very odd sometimes ha ha)
Patrick George - bass
Simon Connor - drums, guitars, mandolin
