Biography

  • Founded In

New York, New York, United States

With equal doses of '60s girl group charm and '70s punk rock swagger, The Prissteens emerged on the New York scene during the 1990s. Richard Gottehrer, who notably produced debut albums by Blondie and the Go-Gos and penned songs such as "My Boyfriend's Back" and "I Want Candy" assisted The Prissteens with their 1998 album Scandal, Controversy & Romance. The album included several covers, including "(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World" and "Sorrow." Much of the album has a retro sound, and the band merits comparison to The Detroit Cobras and Thee Headcoatees with its combination of soul and garage influences. Vocals are often reminiscent of Joan Jett and The Runaways.

The song "Beat You Up" from The Prissteens also appeared on the Jawbreaker soundtrack and in the film.

The band consisted of Tina Cannellas on guitar and vocals, Lori Yorkman on bass and vocals, Joe Vincent on drums, and Leslie Day on guitar and vocals. Joe Vincent had been in another band, Devil Dogs, before joining The Prissteens. He later played drums in Swingin' Neckbreakers.
