I was at my college disco (ECA, aka Edinburgh College of Art) back in 1977 when I heard the band playing this. Didn't think much of 'em, but they were pretty 'enthusiastic', and I remember saying to someone there, "wouldn't it be funny if this made the charts and got played on ToTP". Sure enough . . .

Art-school cleverness peeking through: a bright, shiny pop song about the emptiness of the industry that cranks out bright, shiny pop songs. But there's an obvious problem with the critique: the song is so damned good that it seems to justify the very industry they're criticizing. If the pop-music production line churns out polished gems like this, who'd want to condemn it? Sure, a lot of pop-music is formulaic crap put out by fame-seekers with more ambition than talent. But then there are the fame-seekers with talent matching their ambition--fame-seekers like the Rezillos--who master those well-worn pop music formulas and then mangle them just enough to craft something unique and wonderful. And why would we wanna give up their work, and the pleasures it gives us, just to retain our integrity? Bollocks to integrity, if it means I can't have my pop fun.
