This album really redefined the word "atmospheric" for me. Now I just laugh at some of the so-called "atmospheric black metal" bands as their idea of atmosphere in music really pales in comparison to Rain Upon the Impure. Be sure to listen to this in pure darkness on a particularly chilly day for peak atmo-black!

I'm kinda new to them but this album is really something special, it's mindblowing. I detect a strong Esoteric influence here and there, which is a good thing obviously.

This album means a lot to me. The atmosphere, the riffs, the production, fucking perfect

Incredible album, songs that Vikings might play while journeying through swampy marshlands ....

I have seen the waveforms. The album comes out at DR11 on the CD version, so if any compression was used, it was very minimal. The album is definitely hushed a lot more than most CDs are, but that alone doesn't mean it was compressed.

I'm not sure if you'd actually seen the wavegraph. The music is well compressed, then the entire mix is hushed down by few dB. Take Elysian Blaze as an example - no compression at all.

I'm glad this album was mastered this way; it beats the shit out of most modern albums that are just brickwalled to death. The music actually has space to breathe on this album. In fact I'd go so far as to say this album has some of the best production on any black metal album I've ever heard; the atmosphere perfectly fits the music. Then again all of von Meilenwald's production is pretty much perfect.

v yep, he produced it exactly this way, because he intended to do so. He has no producers, he does everything on his own, that includes mixing and mastering (or rather not in this case, lol).

What, you know for a fact that he didn't produce it himself? I don't think a dedicated engineer would let this leave his/her studio. But yes, the production befits this masterpiece. It complements the atmosphere. Classic album, such an achievement! Who needs a loud master anyway? People that make mix tapes? Well fuck that, sit yourself down and listen to the whole album while tearing into a whole suckling pig you wimps.

Pretty sure he recorded/produced this album himself, and that's why it's "quiet" and perhaps unmastered.

The best TRoB album. Not sure why there doesn't seem to be as much love for this album as the other two. Blood Vaults (I: Thy Virgin Malodour) blows my fuckin mind everytime.....
