The Servants was an indie band formed in 1985 in Hayes, Middlesex, England by singer and songwriter David Westlake.

The Servants was the original home of Luke Haines, later of The Auteurs and Black Box Recorder.

The band’s Small Time / Hey Hey We’re The Manqués double-album was well received on its 2012 release, more than twenty years after its 1991 recording. The belated release followed the inclusion of 1990’s Disinterest album in Mojo magazine’s 2011 list of the greatest British indie records of all time.

Westlake and Haines played together for the first time in over twenty years at the Lexington, London N1 in 2014.

Westlake has released two solo albums: Westlake in 1987, and a second in 2002, Play Dusty For Me (re-issued 2015).

Around the time The Servants split in 1991, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch tried to locate Westlake in hope of forming a band with him.

An early line-up of The Servants appeared on 1986’s NME-associated C86 compilation.
