Beautiful song with somewhat hidden dark lyrics. From what I understand it's about going out on a picnic on into the countryside with your girlfriend knowing that she's cheated on you and while you're there shooting her. Anyway still an unbelievable song from when they were at the peak of their powers. Just shows how great they were to put together such a complex song that most bands would never be able to touch. Was incredible live as well. What a band.

That's an interesting interpretation and certainly makes sense to be fair. I like the idea of the murder because of the (perceived) dark lyrics going with the happy, uplifting music. The contrast many Roses songs have. The ying and the yang, the Stone and the Rose. But the Acid trip, why not, the pieces fit. And they certainly weren't adverse to trying such substances... Perhaps it's meant to have multiple meanings. There are two versions as well with what I believe to be Brown's original lyrics and the final version which has had the lyrics slightly adjusted by Squire. The original can be found as a demo on the 20th anniversary collectors edition of the debut album and also a re-recorded version of the as a B-side on the single of Ian's solo song 'Time is My Everything'. Whatever the true meaning of the lyrics they certainly conjure up incredible imagery and showcase what a special band they were.

Your perception of it has definitely crossed my mind as well, "Mersey Paradise" is another that mixes lush imagery with some nastier lyrics. I like both interpretations a lot... one of those where I'd rather not know the real meaning maybe. I love the original recording of the song as well, the outro isn't quite as euphoric but it still does the job.

Yeah sometimes best not truly knowing. The ambiguity to their music is one part of its lasting appeal I think. Mersey Paradise is another great example of the two sides to their songs. Shoot You Down is another that comes to mind with its upbeat, happy riff, funky groove and beautiful harmonies but with undoubtedly sinister lyrics. I think it's this ability they had as songwriters as well as their brilliant musicianship which really elevates them above other bands. Their brilliance was fleeting as well, I don't dislike the second record but they lost their groove and pretty much became like any other band. I also thought their come back gigs/tours were great and I'm glad they happened but their peak years of 88/89/90 were something truly unique along with that particular period of time in the UK. It didn't last all that long but they cemented their place along side any of the greats in those years in my opinion.

Definitely agreed, I was blown away by Reni's harmonies when I first heard Shoot You Down. I distinctly remember thinking "these lads are the real deal." Brown himself said there should have been a second album around 91, featuring Fools Gold, One Love and the two respective b-sides. An album of that funky sound would have been absolutely incredible. By Second Coming, Squire had moved on to his Zeppelin influences. I love the album but I made my own alternate tracklist that I think is both tighter flows better

I think we were robbed of another potential stone cold classic of an album on a par with the debut due to the legal issues with the record label at that time . A real shame but some things just aren't meant to be I guess. We'll always have the brilliant material they did release. It's a tragedy that Reni's drumming is only on about 3 albums worth of music. In a way I do think their ultimate implosion only added to their legacy. They were never around long enough to become shit like so many other bands. I'm glad they gave it the send off it deserved with the comeback tours but I think I'm glad there was no 3rd album to be honest. How could it compare. It's great to see how many younger people love them as well. They've become a truly generational band which is great.

Wow thank you lads. Such a great conversation. Love The Roses with all my heart. Love both albums as well, but the debut one (with all b-sides) has some truly magic atmosphere and sound which only this band was managed to create. Magnificent. Anyway there were times I was obsessed with Second Coming so much, man, love this thick and pompous sound too. Groove is remained, guitars are just flawless. I think you both saw the "Spike Island" movie. If you did't you definitely should. I've never been in UK but I guess it was a great time to be alive.

I absolutely love Ian's lyrics for the first verse on the 20th Anniversary demo of this tune.
