Biography

"A great dual-guitar rock band with a rock-idol front-man and catchy songs." –
Ray Manzerek, Keyboardist of The Doors (judge of Napa Valley Battle of the Bands)

"I LOVE a sharply-dressed band." – Tom Gaffey, owner of The Phoenix Theatre and NorCal music scene mentor

"The Subtones claim to have a retro rock sound, and I'd have to agree. The guitars are strong, the lead vocals are cool and are easily idenitifiable, and the songs wander into some interesting lyrical territory. The bands pulls it all off with ease and panache! They probably put on a great live show!" – Indie-Music.com

The Subtones are a retro rock band hailing from Napa Valley, CA. Although The Subtones were raised among the vines of California's playland for the rich, The Subtones forged a sound all their own in Napa's underground music scene. Tom Gaffey, owner of the legendary Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma, has called The Subtones "a fun, enjoyable retro rock band that knows how to have a good time on stage." The Subtones have indeed had "a good time on stage" all over the Napa Valley and beyond, forming a loyal fanbase through their combination of high-energy retro rock, toe-tapping beats, jangly guitars, and eye-opening effects that bring a crowd to its feet…and keep them there.

The Subtones are currently touring in support of their brand new self-titled full-length album "The Subtones". The Subtones are filmed a video for their song, "Skurf", released on DVD, YouTube, and Vimeo. The Subtones sold over 1000 copies of their first self-produced EP, Way Back When, and are posed to sell even more copies of their full-length.

The Subtones are formed by singer Sean Des Jardin's unique and powerful vocals, introspective lyrics, and high-energy stage presence. Identical twin guitarists Dan and Andy Hansen form the heart of the band with their retro-influenced jangly guitars, 60's-based guitar rhythms and spacey guitar effects. Bassist Dylan Varner's complex yet driving basslines and solid stage presence hold down the band's lower end, while drummer Mike Huff's jazzy pounding backbeat rhythm forms the backbone of the band.

The Subtones have been a band since mid-2007, and are determined to make it to the top. Despite having formed less than two years ago, The Subtones have already played a variety of shows in Northern California and beyond, including headlining the nationwide venue The Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma five times and playing a show sponsored by 101.7 The Fox radio station. The Subtones also participated in Napa Valley Battle of the Bands, a sold-out show that was held at the Napa Valley Opera House! The crowd response for this band is always good, as their high-energy stage show grabs people's attention.

These determined artists are poised to take the bull by the horns this next year and turn the NorCal music scene on its head with their upcoming self-titled album and music video. According to local NorCal music scene godfather Dan daSilva of daSilva Records recording studio, "The Subtones are an invaluable asset to the Northern California music scene, and are a breath of fresh air that is badly needed in this era full of sound-alike punk, emo, hard rock, ska, and metal bands. This hard-working act is determined to break the status quo and break into the music scene at large."
