Biography
The Videomatics are a five-piece ambient rock outfit from Brisbane, Australia.
Originally formed after a chance meeting in Scotland between songwriter Joseph Johns
and keyboard player George K, The Videomatics began creating music together based on
a mutual love of haunting guitar melodies, vintage synthesizers and early Cure records.
The pair recorded in Glasgow (drumming on the tracks is Hector MacInnes, brother of
Scottish electronic star Mylo). But when his visa ran out Johns decided to return home to
Brisbane to complete work on new material.
The group take their name from a video store in Vancouver called Videomatica which
Johns discovered while on a backpacking holiday. A cult shop specialising in obscure
and vintage titles it resonated with the aesthetic of the band.
A mix of melancholia and poptastic, these are songs with real depth. Think The Church,
The Cure, Depeche Mode and then move on to contemporary influences such as
Interpol, M83 and The Kills.
The Videomatics’ sound is both gloriously retro, and right now. It’s a potent combination…
