After nearly a year of a studio procrastination, forming early 2012 in London, UK, These Miles are probably ready to fill some ears. A set of much-loved songs brings a sound that crunches Texas is the Reason, Interpol, At the Drive-In, Cursive, Thrice, Quicksand, and Propagandhi into a veritable canvas of frantic and driving rock.
Crunching guitars with intricate melodies sound like an assault of ideas realised with considered pop hooks. The drums pound and double-kick with the urgency and energy of a beloved hardcore band, and the bass picks out a groove that gives the songs a furious swing.
The vocals wrap the song in a mix of political and emotional discontent, exhaled by a voice both ‘indie’ in warmth and punk-rock in urgency. Lyrically, These Miles wander into politics, decrying welfare cuts, futile fights, and chauvinist tedium, but within a song switch to personal struggles and death.
If you asked the members of These Miles what they sound like, half of them would claim they are trying to rekindle the lost 90s mid-west American sound of angular guitars and soaring vocals. The other half would say they are a perfect collision of their childhood favourites from hardcore punk through to heavy rock that owned the airwaves in the 90s.
Having formed out of the still burning embers of some bands you may have heard of, including Circus Act, Springbored, and The Neo Conartists, These Miles have formed a band that is vigorous because of it’s differences, rather than despite them.
