Wildhoney и A Deeper Kind Of Slumber

Two in one... psychedelic consequences of the naturally beautiful and very personal hangover...

Tiamat's first three albums are black metal. Or in the case of Sumerian Cry, I'd say it's black/thrash/doom. Pretty much like Samael - Worship Him. There's also significant influence from Sarcofago and Hellhammer. Other than that, this album doesn't even sound anything like Left Hand Path or Like an Everflowing Steam. The Astral Sleep brought in gothic influence. Riffs are reminiscent of Hellenic Black Metal, while keeping the doomy influence from Samael and Hellhammer. Clouds is pretty much like The Astral Sleep, with psychedelic rock influence being brought in. With that being said, early Tiamat and Treblinka are black metal.

I would still say that first 3 albums have quite a lot of death metallish moments though. Even if we take Clouds, which is the least extreme of the first 3, its speedier moments sound more like something that could be on Scream Bloody Gore than on anything by Mayhem/Darkthrone or Hellhammer/Sarcofago if we talk about first wave of BM. But If we talk about SDM, then yes, they didn't have much in common with it except for being from Sweden. Classic SDM had an approach to sound and music in general which was very different from what Tiamat were doing in early days.

No, it's not black metal, but a late '80's kind of swedeath (Morbid, Merciless, Grotesque, etc.) - rawer, sloppier, more chaotic, and rather prone to occult/satanic themes and aesthetics than classic "Stockholm school" gory/macabre stuff. And I wouldn't classify all those '80's bands as black metal stylistically, as "satanic extreme metal" criterion, as it seems to me, has become lame and irrelevant since like '93.

Both of you don't know shit about first wave black metal at all. Where's the death metal riffs on Sumerian Cry, The Astral Sleep & Clouds? Where's the death metal on those 3 bands you mentoined, Adalgoth? Morbid, Merciless & Grotesque are pretty much black/thrash but I don't feel like wasting my time trying to explain to you guys why these bands are black metal instead of death metal, because I'm sure you guys won't get it.

You don't get it. There's no black metal in Tiamat. Are you twelve years old or what?

If they never released another album, I wouldn't be so sad. All of their discography is so wonderful, imaginative, sincere. They couldn't be one of those big legacy rock/metal bands putting out half-baked unoriginal albums every few years for people to listen out of pity or obligation. If they make something new it will be so great to hear, but if they are done, what they accomplished is already so wide, and I'll cherish listening to these for the rest of my life anyway. BUT I wish they would just make a statement or something, one way or another!

Many say they peaked with Wildhoney but nothing beats A Deeper Kind of Slumber, that album is from another world.

I honestly enjoy all their work equally, it fits different moods, but indeed if I were to choose one favourite album it would be A Deeper Kind of Slumber

in english. it's hard for me to understand everything since it's muffled and he has a british accent but this is what i can hear: quiet part before the final chorus "(. . .)which was very strange, as I was out with a group of friends, we had a few drinks (. . .) jet-lagged, and everything became surreal. The (. . .) of girls taking their clothes off for you, and you're sitting there putting (. . .)" then at the end of the song "was (. . .) I felt quite uncomfortable actually, I didn't really know where (. . .) it was going. That might be my upbringing that makes me slightly shy and prude (. . .) Before that I was once in Canada with (. . .) friends (. . . ) a strip club where they apparently have (. . .) their culture, much more happy and natural and relaxed about it"

My two cents: The song itself is like an ode/homage to damaged people. In the lyrics you have Emily, the "withered rose in bloom, a blooming rose of doom" who thrives in the darker, seedier underbelly of life, and leaves her previous ways behind to pursue debauchery. She's one of the 'Scarred People'. Now the speaker in the audio clip (based entirely on what you've transcribed there, I can barely hear it) is talking about their experiences in strip clubs around the world. So it's sort of a first-hand look into the day-to-day life and thoughts of the seedy, perverse fascinations of another "Scarred Person" if that makes sense. Since, as you may know strip clubs have kind of a negative stereotype and people who frequent them have a stereotype as well.

To ramble on a little bit more, in both the lyrics and the audio clip it appears there's this idea presented that Emily and the speaker are/were both shyer, more demure and uh, "wholesome" individuals, but there's just something about 'being bad' that appeals to them. They're scarred people. lol.
