Trey Gruber was the young frontman of Chicago, IL, United States-based rockband, Parent. Aged only 26, he passed away in September 2017 after a heroin overdose.
Though Gruber had already attracted the interest of the Secretly Canadian record label, Parent had officially released only one song when Gruber died: the glum 'I Tried', in July 2017. More songs had already been recorded at that point, but given Gruber's perfectionism, the surviving band members are not sure what they'll do with the other seven or eight they recorded.
The Numero Group record label posthumously released the first single under Gruber's own name, 'Last July', in June 2019.
