It's not their best, not even close lol. For me only Rubicon is worse. But Illumination is still a good album unlike Rubicon which I dislike (however it has grown on me years after).

Well, Illumination is the most listened album according to last.fm lol, it says a lot. And I understand we judge more considering our personal tastes (introduced me the band, there's a nostalgia factor), it marks the end of Vibeke's era. This album was a bridge from the classic gothic they played to a more aggressive, even alternative sound, the further they went into metal - a new style we notice in Rubicon, Darkest White.

I don't think it is, and if it is it's just an artifact of that album being released around the time last.fm started gaining popularity around the world, especially in Europe, from what I gather last.fm for a longer while was mostly used by Americans etc. and also it has to be mentioned that gothic metal was never a big thing in America unlike it being at least for metal in Europe for a while, for USA it was never popular other than for one band which was an American one (Type O Negative naturally). Now the biggest number of users seem to scrobble My Lost Lenore from their debut album and it actually makes sense to me. And it's a great song and one of their more accessible ones I also think. Those two thing ... don't go together all that often for me personally.

If you listen to albums then Spotify is not for you. Even Sodom’s album Agent Orange isn’t on Spotify and that’s just a load of bullshit. Just buy it or download it on soulseek instead.

just fyi, spotify's availability is location based, meaning people in different regions may have different songs and albums available to them. also i'm pretty sure it's the record labels (and sometimes even the bands/artists themselves) making decisions about their catalogue on spotify. illumination & ashes are the only tristiania albums released by steamhammer, a sub-label of spv gmbh, that is now owned by napalm records. so if the album rights aren't wrapped up in some legal bullshit, it's napalm records you should be complaining about, not spotify. you can and should criticize spotify about a lot of things, but this isn't one of them.

A fabulous band full of original and haunting songs. Each album is actually pretty different from the previous one despite still being gothic metal in its core.

Yes. And actually managed to make quite diverse albums while staying true to their gothic metal essence. Actually gothic metal can be far more diverse than metalcore is which mostly sound very samey to me (I do enjoy some metalcore too btw.). But Tristania was truly something else. I love their songs that are simultaneously aggressive and delicate at times like Libre, Lethean River, Aphelion, The Shining Path etc.

Not at all surprised they're breaking up, they've barely been active over the last few years. Still, they gave us some great albums, especially those first three. Thanks for the music, Tristania.

I first discovered them about 14/15 years ago. I wish I could personally thank everyone who's ever been a part of the band for being such a big part of my youth.

My best guess: they wrote the post on Internet Explorer and it took a decade and a half to upload.

So sad with the end of the amazing band. I wish nothing but happiness and sucess in the future musical projects of all members and of course in life. Hopoefully the family member of one of them struggling with their health right now will soon get better.

They used to be the benchmark of sympho-gothic metal. Nothings came closer to this since... at least 10 years

Unpopular opinions about Tristania: the Morten era is quite overrated; Ashes and Illumination are criminally underrated; World Of Glass is a masterpiece which, if looked at from a slightly different perspective, is actually some badass, cutting edge electronica with some metal in it – and I LOVE it for that. Also, Circus is one of the sexiest songs ever written.

I get what you mean, but I think that the albums with Morten deserve the praise they get. The music and the execution in the first two albums is beyond majestic and they are amongst the best in the doom/gothic/symphonic. But I am glad they kept up the good work after he left.

Don't get me wrong, I do consider both WW and BTV amazing; I just think it's unfair the next three are so overshadowed by them. Both WW and BTV are very representative of the time they came out, for better or worse, whereas I feel WoG, Ahes and Illumination are much more timeless, they feel as fresh and contemporary today as they did in the 2000s.

Their first three albums are my favorites, no doubt about that. However, I honestly like every album they've put out and I hope they're working on new stuff. It's been too long, and "Darkest White" was pretty damn good.

It's a shame what Tristania became to be. Just another faceless female fronted pop metal band, while with Widow's Weeds they are really standing out on the scene — pioneering sympho gothic metal, bringing so much doomy, yet beautiful medieval atmosphere into well structured, complex, but interesting songs. Since Vibeke left, they were just trying to copy the mainstream success of late Nightwish, just like all those faceless bands like Epica, Xandria, After Forever, there are dozen of them, you choose. Pioneer legends of this style — Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, Nightwish, Tristania — they all followed the same path — first abandon they unique and marvellous sound, next fight within the band, lost original members, hire new female vocalist who is WAAY out of the style, and finally start playing electronic pseudo symphonic mainstream so-called metal. I mean, dig their classic albums! Feel this gorgeous aesthetic! And then look at their Facebook pages...

Don't blame Vibeke's departure, Tristania was getting pretty boring even when she was in the band. Plus the style they were doing among bands like Theatre of Tragedy, After Forever, Sirenia and Trail Of Tears slowly started to fade away and eventually evolved into something else. Saying they were trying to copy Nightwish is absurd, they sound nothing like Nightwish.

While I understand your point of view and agree to some extent, I can't follow your logic and comparisons. Tristania never sounded like Nightwish, even in their most recent and weak albums. I don't understand why you would compare them to bands like Epica or After Forever, two bands with a style of their own also (still to this day I can't find any other band similar to them). Maybe a comparison to some of their Norwegian counterparts (Trail of Tears, Theatre etc) makes sense. Also, don't forget Theatre of Tragedy pioneered the "symphonic gothic metal" thing (inspired almost completely by Paradise Lost's second and third album), way before Tristania. I believe Lacuna Coil, Beseech, Asrai, Mortal Love are the closest things to nowadays Tristania, not Nightwish, Therion or Xandria or power metal in general. Also, about evolution, of all the bands you mentioned, Tristania was the last to change and "evolve" their style, rather late and weakly I'd say

My thought was not about who followed who. My thought is in this thing that all these bands turned to be super mediocre compared to their old classic albums. It's funny how music all of the bands mentioned here in this thread became so passable with time (except for Paradise Lost maybe). It became so pale, dull, bearing only a bleak shadow of first albums' beauty.

It's all a matter of preference after all. Paradise Lost, on the other hand, was the first to shift dramatically the sound from their first albums and, in my opinion, inspired the bands of the the same era to do the same

All these bands are sounding different now because people evolve, things change and relationships become tiring. If I was a musician I'll surely be bored to record albums that sound the same. As I remember Vibeke said she was not excited with metal anymore but now she's coming back with a doom metal band, maybe is just a matter of time to feel connected again.

i respectfully disagree. i think taking ToT as an example of how the band changed for worse wasn't a good idea. ToT was a gem in all genres they proposed to do. boys in their early 20s made some beautiful albuns like the first three ones, then they thought that merging electronic and metal would be good, and they completely nailed it. `assembly` is one of the best albums ever made. i do think for their creativity and innovation they deserved better recognition. to all the other bands mentioned in your comment, i do think changing is part of living. you can't have tristania in 2020 doing the same they did in 1996. it would be counterproductive. as for their new albums, i wouldn't say i love them, but i don't hate them either. and for a matter of comparison you definitely can't compare them to nightwish. they have female vocals, but the similarities end there. they sound nothing alike.
