Haha, the only others I've ever listened to outside the film are 300 (which I really liked) and Dawn of the Dead (which I don't remember, and I haven't seen the film). GotG being proof of ability, perhaps it's his belief that he must abstain from "highly emotive, melodic themes" that's holding him back beyond necessity in his other work.

It's pretty great :3 James Gunn: "Unlike most films, Tyler writes huge chunks of the score first so that I can actually film to the music. During action scenes and huge dramatic moments we blare the score on set so that the cast, crew, and camera can move in harmony with the music. Music is often an afterthought in film, but never for us." http://screenrant.com/guardians-galaxy-movie-2014-composer-tyler-bates-score/ "'Very few movies that are made these days are fantastical enough to sustain huge, bold identifiable themes,' Bates explains. 'Even with the majority of the comic-book films, they have a tendency to be steeped in a realism that would be disturbed or interrupted by highly emotive, melodic themes.' (...) Because Guardians was a colorful film that's both fun and fantastical, Bates embraced a spectrum of sounds." http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2014/07/22/tyler-bates-guardians-of-the-galaxy-soundtrack-exclusive/13009705/

Snutskallar: I wholeheartedly agree. It's funny, on one hand we have Basil Poledouris' masterpiece, one of the greatest film scores ever written, on the other end of the spectrum, we have Tyler Bates' contribution - one of the most incompetent and downright awful scores ever composed, nothing less than an insult to the legacy of Conan, Poledouris, not to mention an insult to the human ear. Figures.

His soundtrack on Conan was such an insulting load of crap - soulless, stock and unmemorable. Come on, did this guy even TRY to recapture some of the spirit that Poledouris imparted on the original Conan movie? One almost gets the impression he never bothered watching the original. Even Conan the Destroyer, as cheesy as it was, had a memorable theme. Was there a single scene in the reboot where the music grabbed you? What a talentless hack.

Conan score is a piece of shit. I'm a fan of the literary works, and the Arnie films - this included Poledouris score which, despite the films' shortcomings, created such amazing atmosphere that really evoked visions of Robert E. Howard's world in my mind's eye. But Tyler's score is, as Mulgorea put it, generic shit, 1h 10min of mere background music with nothing special or memorable whatsoever.

I was expecting atleast Basil Poledouris quality! No more no less. Did he manage it? :D Nah, kidding of course, but it's still a shame. It's just too much same generic shit for me, boing straight through. 2/5, just because it might work decent on sceen (i'm always nice before i've seen a movie). Even taking RCP in mind. I was expecting a decent prologue with high adventure, atleast something different to the endless smashing. Why not a "introduction voice" like the orginal? Something rememberable. Yeah, the review is good. I pretty much agree. Laughed on some of the tracks, I just can't get into it, it's just so bad. Was thinking it would have atleast one or a few good cues, but not even that. Headache score for me otherwise =[ What do you Bates fans think of Conan? Curious how different my opinion is
