Pete Griffin - Bass

Like some emotional magnet, From All Directions draws listeners in with an impassioned sound that is equal parts pop, rock and sheer exuberance.

For Ultrapull, playing is less about making big statements and more about passion, creativity and craftsmanship - old-school qualities that have been trampled underfoot in the modern rush for quick hits. But while Ultrapull's Gold Circle Records debut album From All Directions combines effervescent pop melodies with hard rocking guitars and unusually tight rhythms, closer inspection reveals 12 original songs of ingratiating honesty and emotion. Indeed, singer-guitarist Dale Everett, guitarist Gerard Garcia, bassist Pete Griffin and drummer Harry Meguerdichian have sculpted a record commendably lacking in chest-pounding bravado, but heavy in emotional content and energy.

Ultrapull’s songs will make listeners feel like they've intruded on a private moment. Relationships, breakups, betrayal, lost opportunities…. All of these are central themes that can be found in Ultrapull’s songs. Listening to the album, one can't help but be impressed by Everett's and Garcia's mature melodies and arrangements From All Directions opens with "Out for Me," a contemplative rocker where Everett wonders if past transgressions are responsible for his failing relationship. On the compelling ballad "Never Have Words," the band chronicles the sad final days of a dying romance.

"Every song is based on a personal experience," says Dale Everett, explaining the songwriting philosophy shared by himself and co-composer/lead guitarist Gerard Garcia. "Most of the time it's something I'm going through, but there's actually been times when I don't know why I'm writing something, then the exact events of the song actually occur in the future."

The Ultrapull saga begins with singer-guitarist Dale Everett’s childhood of alienation and confusion. Dale grew up estranged from his father and was raised by a single mom. In 1994, Everett was introduced to guitarist Garcia through a mutual associate. Right off the bat, the two guitarists forged a creative bond that remains strong to this day. "We're like yin and yang," Everett says. "I'm the hyper, talkative guy, and Gerard is the mellow guy. He let's me do my thing and I let him do his. On top of all that, (Gerard is) an amazing guitar player, so we just clicked."

Everett and Garcia started playing in bands together, but the musical magic they were seeking proved elusive. Frustrated, Everett and Garcia soldiered on as a duo, composing songs and recording demos on their own. They met Harry Meguerdichian a few months before showcasing and were blown away by his uncanny ability to play the drums and his hard work ethic. Later, Pete Griffin was added and an amazing rhythm section was born.

As luck would have it, an Ultrapull demo reached the desk of a Gold Circle A&R; executive; a fortunate occurrence which led to the band signing with the Los Angeles label. Now with the release of their debut album, Ultrapull looks forward to living up to their curious name with the hope that the masses will be drawn to their music. By confronting their own personal demons, the members of Ultrapull articulate the emotions, hopes and frustrations of a frantic new era.

"Basically, it's from the heart. We just write whatever we feel. It is possible to have emotion and to be diverse, and not sound exactly like one thing. That’s the ultimate – being able to express yourself like that.”
