“Big Blue” was released alongside “Sunflower” in the second of three early two song releases for Vampire Weekend’s "Father of the Bride". It talks about the emotion felt when around the ocean, and the tremendous power the ocean has. That is why the music video is of fish.
"Big Blue" is likely a reference to the 1992 Sega Genesis game Echo The Dolphin. In an interview with Pitchfork, Ezra said that the game had a big influence on Father of the Bride.
In the game “Big Blue” is the name of a blue whale who guides Echo after a waterspout sucks all of the marine life out of his home bay.
Speaking about Echo the Dolphin, Ezra said:
"'Somebody gave me their old Xbox, and one of the games was a CD that had 30 Sega games on it. I started playing Ecco the Dolphin again and I almost got chills. It’s a weird, spooky, beautiful game. This shit made a big impression on me. Dolphins made a big impression on a lot of us back then. I also saw an image of a southern right whale dolphin with an almost yin yang coloring on him, which was really striking to me. I’ve never swam with the dolphins, and I don’t even like being on boats that much, but seeing this beautiful creature stopped me in my tracks.'"
