“Prep-School Gangsters“ is named after a New York magazine story by Nancy Jo Sales of the same title, which described the curious phenomenon of New York City gangs comprised of an alliance of private school kids and poor Americans selling drugs. The article details how students from very exclusive private schools would try to adopt the “ghetto lifestyle” and join a gang as a way of acting cool or rebelling against their high-powered parents. Or maybe as a means of economic opportunity? But whether the song is about 90s street gang culture or class conflict is up for debate.
