"Madame George" is spellbinding, the last song you listen to as the dawn comes, when you've been out all night and are dead tired but still enchanted by the memory of the stars. This is falling in love, not with a person but with an experience and a forgotten but remembered snatch of some whispered line. Here's that violin downpour again. Feel it on your face as you turn your collar up, as you turn your face toward home.

Somewhere there is Bevois Valley...maybe 1971, cold, dark, maybe January, maybe December....upstairs,dingy looking carpet, inhaling a dope cigarette and passing it on, and someone put this on and I fell into the trance of Madame George......time stopped; life stopped; movement stopped; just the circle of melody and words that went round and round; mind stopped; heart stopped; breath stopped; was it in the hospital ward? was it in the engineering student's room? was it the day of the Saturday Jumbly? Where did the circle of words and melody begin that has never stopped? Does it matter, that moment when you heard the clicking and clacking of the high heeled shoe, smelled the sweet perfume and saw the children collecting bottle tops and going for cigarettes and matches in the shops, happy taking Madame George?..... And you - with your folded arms and history books ..(sharp jab in the heart) and then you're caught up playing dominoes in drag ......and loves to love to love to love......

"Hey love, you forgot your gloves and the love that loves the love that loves the love that loves the love that loves to love the love that loves to love the love that loves" Possibly the best lyric ever uttered by man.

This song haunted me from the moment I heard it , stoned in a student flat in So'ton, with my then boyfriend,Dave Felce, who was at So'ton Uni...maybe that was the moment when I began to realise that I was gay..or at least to stop denying it....

Just beautiful. Do you need more words to review/describe such a piece? No, not at all. Beautiful is enough.

Perfect song. I know there are a few interpretations, I like this one best: You know things are changing...you are moving on...it's time to move forward from wherever you are at. And that does mean losing old friends and old situations, not a happy thought but it is the only way to grow. (I just can't figure out where & why the transvesite comes into play!)

The genius of the string and horn arrangements by Larry Fallon wonderfully embody the character of madam George without them this would be a lesser work of art, in turn Astral Weeks would be a slighter work because this is the central pillar from which the rest of the songs radiate.

it never ceases to amaze me how people need to complain about the song or the running time in shoutboxes. just download/buy the song and listen, and leave a comment that has relevance if you will. of course, it doesn't get too much better than this tune.
