Biography

VanWyck is Christine Oele, a Dutch-born, New Zealand-bred singer and songwriter based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her dark folk sound, warm voice and lyrical songwriting has drawn comparisons with Nathalie Merchant, Leonard Cohen and Laura Marling.

After some years in the band Nevada Drive, Oele released her début EP as VanWyck, the Tanned Legs EP (2015) to international acclaim from English, French and American blogs. She then started a new project called 'One Song a Week', writing and releasing a new song (almost) every week. Some of those releases were studio recordings with a full band, some came from live shows, some were shot as videos and others were sung in kitchens.

The result of that year is An Average Woman (2018), Van Wyck's first full-length album, released in Janurary 2018. VanWyck's musical collaborators include award-winning bass player and arranger, Reyer Zwart, as well as singer Marjolein van der Klauw, whose silvery voice is the perfect counterbalance to VanWyck’s own darker tones. It is, as one reviewer wrote, "music that coaxes your demons asleep, then cradles them away, with love, in light, from off your shoulders, from off your back."

A sophomore album, Molten Rock, came out in 2019. In 2020 VanWyck started working on her third full-length, but the Covid-19 pandemic got in the way. Instead of recording her planned third album, she recorded four sparse songs in an intimate setting, added four songs 'from the shelf', and called the collection, God Is In The Detour, her third album. After that, she finished the album she was already working on at the start of the pandemic. The Epic Tale of the Stranded Man (2022) became VanWyck's most successful album to date.
