I don't know why many metalheads think that the band started to decline with Dechristianize, for me it's just as good as Dawn of the Apocalypse.

Most of them are probably children or teenagers. Can't remember many complaining around the time of release.

Yeah I remember that it was rated very highly among death metallers back in the day, I was very young and not that much into death metal then but nowadays I can appreciate it and I think it's one of their best. It has all the elements that made previous albums great, including the epic lengthy songs.

Yeah, I saw them live in 2007 in Lund, Sweden, and none of my death metal head-friends had anything negative to say. They were all positive. All of them said: "Det var ju jävla ett mangel det här!" :)

Lost respect for the band after knowing this. I mean, yeah I get its part of their image, but that behavior is just so juvenile.

Was a good run for this band, right up to 2000. That cunt Benton ruined two bands with his greedy bullshit.

I don't agree that he completely ruined everything. Dechristianize was pretty good and just continued developing the sound they built on Dawn of the Apocalypse and his vocals really fit well there. Icons of Evil is pretty lame though. To me it sounds like a really boring, aggressionless, sterile version of Dechristianize. At first glance it has all the attributes that are supposed to make music aggressive, but in fact it just doesn't work. And the approach to song structures that worked on Dechristianize and Dawn of the Apocalypse starts feeling just too formularic and predictable here. I've been trying to return to this album every once in a while to see if anything changed for me or if there was something that I've been missing before that I may hear now with a bit changed perception but results don't really vary too much. But I don't think that this is related to Benton specifically. He was just an invited vocalist and the main guys behind creative process were Lazaro and Suzuki.

В песне Dechristianize что-то шедевральное выдали, примерно с середины начинается охуенная мелодия и обыгрывается на протяжении всей песни

Listen to the Intro track on Dawn of the Apocalypse. It has the funniest misheard lyrics ever. They sing "I want cheesy puffs" and there's a mentioning of "red sauce, meat sauce". There's even a mentioning of "Starbucks" in there. I know those can't be the real lyrics. Listen! It may just be me. It's hilarious!

I always hear "Woman's retarded" when they repeat "Ave satanas" on the song Immortal Crusade

as of 2022 he's doing better, judging by his Facebook account. VR supposedly played live again sometime last year.

Blackened death metal? The way I see them, they're predominantly death metal. Maybe, death metal with a sprinkle or dash of black metal. That sounds more accurate to me.

I think it is more about their first 2 albums. They are somewhere right between black and death metal. The musical carcass is more of death metal but there is quite a lot of black metalish riffs and occasional keyboards used in a way a black metal band would use. And I would say vocals by Jeff Gruslin who was on these 2 albums are something that should come to mind first when you hear about blackened death.

Vital Remains is one my favorite Death Metal band, the last time I seen them was in 2015 and we took a pic. Great moments to remind.

Forever Underground is a bit underappreciated. That is one hell of an amazing record.

DeChristianize is a classic. First and last time I heard it was like 10 years ago. Listened again today and still feels fucking good man.

Awesome show at NYC's Saint Vitus last night. Too bad they didn't play "Behold the Throne of Chaos" or "Forever Underground."
