great pianist... took me a minute to appreciate his no nonsense style, but it works. love his Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Chopin, and Scriabin (no small feat, Scriabin is hard to get right... but a killer in the right hands). one of the greatest living.

Personally I can't think of anyone who does the preludes like Askhenazy. However it's all really up to your interpretation of the pianist and how he/she plays them. You may think that one has more emotion or has more skill in the way they play the preludes. I find that Askhenazy puts emotion and skill into the preludes more than most of the pianists I have seen. You could look at each of the parts of the preludes separately, starting with Prelude in C sharp minor and compare each pianist. I mean lets listen to Gilels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtuMVBLEWJU. Now for Ashkenazy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSO6dfTgVOY Next we have Ruslan Sviridov: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og0r88sJm2I Personally I just prefer Ashkenazy out of those 3, but that is just 3. I'm sure there are many others and again that is just one piece of the preludes. Chances are your friend found an interpretation that just suits her better than Ashkenazy's.

Wow!! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Last.fm. You really make my days / evenings so wonderful. I can listen to the styles of music that I feel like at that instant, without having to shuffle through my song lists, as I collect hundreds of CDs and such...but I find this much better!
