A great album. Has Object, Sweetheart, and Woman and Man (which are among the best Ween songs) , the better version of Friends, lots of diversity in musical styles, blah blah blah. It just happens to have some of the worst Ween songs as well (goddamn Shamemaker).

I enjoy "Blue Balloon," " Learnin To Love, " "With My Own Bare Hands, " "The Fruit Man, " "Woman & Man," and " Shamemaker. "

@DJpalazzo I think Gene's criticisms and the long (for Ween) wait between albums for this leading to big expectations of a boundary-pushing masterpiece (after all the Friends EP represented a new direction for the boys, so it was somewhat reasonable to expect the LP that followed to be new and exciting direction) are a big part of why fans tend to view this as so weak. And admittedly it is one of the Ween records I pull out the least often, but it's far from a failure. "My Own Bare Hands" is one of my favorite Ween songs, "Learnin' to Love" is among their best attempts at a Country type song, "Man and Woman" is a towering epic with an absolutely godlike guitar solo... in fact, as JamesHippieKid mentioned, the album closes on a very (very) strong note with the last few tracks. The "Friends" remake is unnecessary, "Shamemaker" sounds, er... way too much like the Pop Punk it is ostensibly parodying for my liking and "Spirit Walker" is that brand of reggae Ween's done to death. Still good.

I'm happy to see so many positive shouts about this album. Far from my favorite in the Ween catalogue but I've still never been sure (beyond Gene calling it a "pile of shit") why everyone hates on this album. It's fucking great (though I could have done without ever hearing Friends, even if I love the synth/percussion breaks towards its back half).

all ween fans should give this album more chances. it's still nice and brown, just brown in a different way than most ween fans are used to. i didnt like it on my first listen, but i instantly started to appreciate all the songs on my second shot. the only thing i can still say i'm not a huge fan of are the vocals on shamemaker. they're a little overdone. other than that, great record.

I don't get how anyone could say something negative about this album. You shouldn't compare it to other Ween albums. You should just appreciate the music. I fucking love this album.

After hearing some of the songs that the Gene Ween Band played, I think this record had potential to be a lot better. Still not a bad album but definitely the one I listen to the least.

Definitely a grower. I remember feeling a bit dissapointed when it came out, and I still think its probably the weakest Ween album, but the more I listen to it, the better it sounds. And obviously, being the weakest album by a band like Ween doesn't mean its at all bad.

can't tell people what to like, but it seemed to me like this disc was kinda a "look, we can make a badass song in every popular genre (though ours may not be so)." and how, fellas...and how. i love ween.

What's worse than that tho is how Deaner was dissin' people who own Ipods and download music from Itunes in an interview http://www.avclub.com/content/node/69055 and then Itunes has bag of fat as a (horrible) bonus track. I sympathize with him in a lot of that interview, but really... wtf mang?

Blue Balloon, Learnin' to Love, Shamemaker, and Sweetheart are... acceptable. Having listened to and idolized Ween since I was a lil' kid, it breaks my heart but I agree with PmF. This ain't brown at all man. and I'm saying this after trying to like it for like, five months now?... I'd really like to hope I can change my mind someday.
