The Yes that we came to know and love were still relatively light years away when it comes to the first two records. But "Then" is an interesting piece in that it starts to reveal more the direction they'd eventually take. You get the overabundance of the orchestral parts (which would be replaced by Wakeman in tbe future.) You also get the sudden tempo shifts, a staple of the beloved Yes sound. Time and a Word is not one of the true Yes classics but this is one of the better songs from that early period. The pieces were there, it was just a matter of putting them together.

Ah, the early days. Just don't get it with Banks and Kaye I'm afraid. Beatles covers and whimsical twitterings. Must admit this points the way forward though and the sound of Chris Squire's bass is as ever omni-present. Is that a horn section I can hear in there.......now that's progressive!! Shit, maybe I should actually give the first two albums a listen........I know I'll be drawn back to those topographic oceans though.

I love the way Jon's voice sounds on the first couple albums...this song is a great example of why.
