Biography
ZDSO is space music. Not just spacey sounding music, but also conceptually and intentionally so. Zixel's Deep Space Orchestra is a conceptual music project under the Transcorps Sound banner conceived by Transcendental Desecration's members Gideon Trillian and Maggy Mjolnir. Every track is intended to be experienced within the context of the full album it is part of. Each album has a specific story or chapter in the continuing misadventures of our main character Captain Zixel who is usually the sole crew member of a deep space exploration vessel called "Ormen Lange", though often other characters mysteriously appear in the narratives. Each album is accompanied by a fully written script or program guide outlining each scene/track. Like any film score, the various tracks on each album can differ in mood quite noticeably making it rather difficult to assign an easy genre to the albums.
The first seeds of Gerrald Zixel's Deep Space Orchestra started sprouting in the very early days of Transcendental Desecration in 1991. "Gerrald" was a recurring character at the heart of many of the improvised spoken word aspects of early TD jam sessions. A brain-child of Gideon's, "Gerrald" was in many ways an alter ego. His wild and fantastic adventures quickly became popular and helped give the band an outlet for comedic absurdism. "Gerrald's" adventures were always surreal and often delved into realms of insanity and weirdness, but he had a few years to go before he became the famous space explorer that he is now. Fast forward to around 2003 and The Also Presidents (Gideon and Maggy Mjolnir) unconsciously began resurrecting the character and concepts of Gerrald Zixel by way of performing undercover as a different band. It quickly became apparent during these incognito performances that they were also altering the type of music they were presenting without really consciously trying to. Both Gideon and Maggy have long been fans of space music and experimental sounds so they made a decision to actually branch out and turn the incognito persona into a full fledged project. Thus, since around 2003-2004, the duo have been regularly composing and recording many rough pieces of music under the name Zixel's Deep Space Orchestra.
