“I like them a lot.. it features ukelele and mandolin instead of the usual guitars, yet it doesn’t sound as aggressively twee as you might imagine it would, in fact it’s just brilliant.” - Dani Charlton, Amazing Radio
sootytern… “what?”, “it’s a bird!”, “oh..” are Jayson (Vocals/Ukelele), Fenton (Mandolin), Peet (Bass) and Ewan (Drums). They are best known for playing sessions in caves. Hailing from Cumbria and now based across the north-west, they play folk/pop avian/science-based loveliness.
Their second e.p. “Who does not know famous Swan” (released 28/10/12) encompasses the band’s love for the lake district and our apparent mortality. The title stems from a quote in the William Wordsworth poem “The Waggoner” and eloquently sums up Ewan’s (a.k.a. Swan’s) passion for elegant posture and hissing at strangers. In particular, their track “Grasvagas” directly addresses the band’s fondness for the fast-paced nightlife of Grasmere, its link with Wordsworth and mysteries of Wastwater.
The band’s debut e.p. Ornithological Physics, (released 13/03/12) has received stunning success, earning them airplay on Amazing Radio and BBC 6 Music alongside live sessions on BBC Introducing and DIY Radio amongst others. They’ve played shows with excellent acts including, We Were Evergreen, Nat Johnson, Denis Jones, Eliza and the Bear, Spokes and Cats In Paris, alongside playing slots at northern festivals Kendal Calling, Eurocultured and Fell Foot Sound.
