When performing without a guitarist, Australian rock/pop band The Whitlams go under the title of The Moody Jews. The Moody Jews are Tim Freedman (piano, vocals) as well as the drummer and bass player from the current Whitlams line-up at the time they are performing.
Playing covers of Jewish songwriters, as well as Whitlams songs, The Moody Jews were most prolific in 1997. The Moody Jews covered songs by Lou Reed, Kate Bush and Randy Newman among others.
No official recording have ever been released as The Moody Jews, but many songs first played in the trio have been released on The Whitlams albums, including "One In A Million", recorded with a different arrangement as "Up Against The Wall" on Eternal Nightcap, and later released again in a similar style to the original as "One In A Million" appearing as a b-side on the "Fall For You" single. Many of the songs appearing on "Love This City" were played by The Moody Jews in the years beforehand.
In 2001 The Moody Jews performed in the ABC drama "Love is For Letter Word", performing "I Will Not Go Quietly".
In 2004 The Moody Jews performed several practice gigs in Newtown, Sydney.
