okay but this is such a perfect album... blur managed to create a character album in parklife, and perfected it in TGE. people usually complain about how over the top the songs are, but it reflects how immersed they were in their own concepts, mixing with the anxiousness and the melancholy they were going through at that time. this is also one of the best produced blur albums, a pop perfection!!!

You think so? That's interesting, I've just been listening to this album for the first time ever and I was just thinking how well it's aged. Ear of the beholder, I guess.

I think it's a thing of the moment, when the singles came out they were a success, but now I listen to them and they sound outdated like it wasn't blur, don't get me wrong the album is not bad but some songs are just kinda meh

Opinions on this album really seem to divide people, huh... I love The Universal; He Thought of Cars can be quite something (Iook up the one on Jools Holland), but overall The Great Escape is one of my least favourite Blur albums.

So uneven it hurts. I absolutely love Charmless Man, Fade Away, He Thought of Cars and the Universal, but then I can't possibly stand the likes of Top Man, Dan Abnormal and Best Days and although not bad Stereotypes is for sure the worst opener of their discography.

Japanese Workers.

A very good album but I can see why Albarn isn't particularly fond of it. Take away the brilliant highlights (most of which occur very early on) and it's perhaps Blur's least inspired effort... not their most engaging compositions musically.

Not bad, slowly growing on me, but must've been a big disappointment coming after Parklife.

You can't really talk about Blur's britpops albums being underrated, especially with such an inconsistent record like this one [2]

Actually, FOUR top 10 singles from this album. Even more successful than I remembered.

People throw around the word "underrated" to feel good about their odd (bad?) tastes, but this album was a massive commercial success in 1995: it went straight into the UK charts at no.1; it landed Blur their infamous victory over Oasis with Country House; it was adored by NME, Melody Maker, Q and every other magazine (which meant a lot more in the pre-net era); it was ALL over the British media during the height of Britpop; it provided Blur with three top 10 singles. In other words, anyone who considers it "underrated" is either ignorant or downright bonkers. The general consensus is that this album is largely overrated -- people wanted to love it so much at the time that they just ignored its blatant flaws (as they did with with every Oasis album until Britpop overstayed its welcome).

Has to be one of the top Blur albums, surely? Definitely better than the bombast of Parklife, that much is obvious, now it's a toss-up between Blur (eponymous) and Think Tank. Looking back, this album is a lot more melancholic than at first experienced (as discussed below), I'm sure it's a real 'grower'; for a newer fan. Much as one has to look past 'Song 2', one must look past 'Country House'..

I've got weird feeling about this album. I adore some of the songs (esp. He Thought Of Cars and The Universal) and totally dislike other (like Country House or Entertain Me).

Interesting that the album has very positive professional reviews while the fans don't like it that much, they prefer MLIR or Blur, or 13 more. I think the Great Escape is a gem; it sounds more obscure than Parklife, almost the whole album is about being lonely, it is often melancholic...I think musically and lyrically it's a brilliant work. It reminds me often of Genesis' brilliant prog rock gem, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It's as good as MLIR, it's different, you just can't compare the two.
