It took me 20 years, but I now realize this is every bit the equal of the debut album. I like to think of it as the first LP's angry, troubled, but just as talented, younger brother. It does everything it can do to get you to not like it, but once you accept it for what it is, it reveals its power. Over an hour of kaleidoscopic blues-rock riffage, deadly funk grooves and stoned audio collage. Bloated, pompous, swaggering...genius!

On no planet is this a bad album. It is crazy how people will read into what impatient music journalists thought.

Not all records need to be rediscovered or treated with kids gloves. This album is whack and any comparison to the first is nothing other than absurd. Deservedly forgotten imo.

As much as some people criticize this record, it's loads better than other bands' "overblown" albums - your "Be Here Nows" and your "Sally Can't Dances." I'm glad people are waking up to it now.

I like the fact that in Shaun of the Dead this isn't thrown at the two approaching zombies and is kept safe along with the debut where as Dire Straights and the Batman Soundtrack go flying. This deserved to be saved.

Turn the album cover upside down and you'll see the Devil in the folds of the collage.

That people shit on this album so much even 25 years later just shows how deeply most people base their opinions on music authorities... just shake off the association of the last record being a Madchester record and listen to it on its own merit. It's true to their "bringing back rock'n'roll" ethics that's at the core of their sound and dare I say John Squire's genius is fleshed out out here a little more than the first one. Then the same crowd complains when a band does the same style more than one album... you can't win

That "crowd" is notorious for clinging to an esoteric cultural trend that happened briefly and regionally - I wouldn't expect any less when your platform is basically a fanbase of people with a very narrow scope and unrealistically niche prerequisites - but you can't really blame them for that since an on-trend band should always know and respect its audience and the contemporary musical climate. Millennials however pick up this album unbridled by the weight and expectation of a dying subculture and embrace it as a balls out rockin' record - which is great 👌🏼

I've tried numerous times throughout the years. I think I'm finally ready to concede that this is a somewhat shit album. Ten Storey Love Song sounds like a B-side off of their début (an excellent B-side though, to be fair). And How Do You Sleep is inspired. But the rest sound like a sometimes intriguing (for Squire's guitar work) but ultimately unfulfilling jam session—and compares decidedly unfavourably to The Verve's A Storm in Heaven. By the time we've arrived at the end—Foz, buried in between a bunch of gimmicky silent tracks—they've surrendered pretense, and wank's all that remains. Love Spreads is pretty much the only one to sound like an actual song—albeit a tediously long-winded one. There's loads other psychedelic records from the same era that blow this one out of the water. Cf. the already mentioned Verve record, Blind Mr. Jones - Stereo Musicale, Ride - Nowhere, and, especially, My Bloody Valentine - Loveless—&c.

i disagree, the album have great tunes, begging you, good times, daybreak, tighrope, they are not bad songs, it is definitely not better than the original, but it has things that the debut did not do well, such as maintaining consistency in their songs and have better lyrics, the debut shows that it is a compilation, this shows that it is a complete and hard work, surely it is not the best there is, I would give it a 7/10, maybe the sounds of the album are not for you and honestly foz don't count it on the album, on the original cd the song doesn't come out, it was a song that sounded like 20 minutes after the album ended

It's bizarre how this album has been slagged off so much. When it first came out Melody Maker praised it, and it really showcases the Roses' penchant for psychedelia and house much better than the first record. Also John's playing is crazier and ups the ante for the entire album. The only problem with this record that it was put out after the Madchester era and in the Britpop phase, which is unfortunate because this record deserves it's unsung praise. If you haven't given this record a chance, I suggest listening to Breaking Into Heaven ( that long intro is def worth it), Ten Storey Love Song ( has the debut album vibe), Daybreak, Begging You (biggest killer groove ever), Tears and Love Spreads.

v Agreed. Sadly, the media brainwashing is still ingrained in many people's minds, so they'll slag this album off even though they've probably not even heard it. It's sad really. because it really is just as good as the debut, if not better. It's a much more straight-up rock n' roll record, that's for sure, but still retains that Stone Roses atmosphere.

This one is as good as the debut. Sadly, the media trashed it even before it was released, opaquing the true beauty of it. It's criminally underrated.

I love so much this album...it's one of my favs, definitely an agressive sound compare with the previous album and so much psychedelia around.

"Love Spreads" is one of the finest guitar jams that Esquire has made. That slide-work in drop D is so fuckin' cool.

Definitely not as good as their s/t, but still rather good. Easy 8.5, maybe? Of course, the debut is a 10/10, no question.
