I saw these maniacs last year at the Hell and Heaven fest. Even though they had a very small audience (partly because they played late at night) and the bastards at the event cut their time short, they gave a great concert. They played most of their best classic tunes. It's a shame that such a legendary and important band for metal receives such poor treatment from the promoters, but then new generations don't know how to appreciate the legacy of bands like Venom. As for myself, I can say that I was able to see the godfathers of extreme metal at least once, and that I was just a few meters away from Cronos.

Huh? I look the same from most angles. Is there something wrong with a head-on shot of myself wearing my goofy little goth outfit? What a weird response, have fun and listen to satan music, dork.

I would say that they are the godfathers of extreme metal overall, not just black metal. They were also very influential to death and thrash metal.

I think nowadays people have trouble thinking Venom was considered black metal, but its true, Venom, Running Wild, and Kat were considered early black metal back in the day.

Surely among the first, people just have some problem with that now because they aren't "trve" enough with their satanic themes.

I was happy to see that eminem made a song about them. What I wasn't happy with however, was of how bad it turned out and how it felt like a fake contribution to such a legendary band. Absolutely disrespectful, you should feel ashamed of yourself Marshal Mathers.

Bathory would have existed without Venom. Venom as the "creator" of BM is the WORST origin story.

We don't know if Quorthon may have been downplaying Venom as an influence on himself. There are some (indecisive) reasons to believe that he was slightly biased in this regard. But even if it's true, this doesn't matter. Death metal would have come into existence without Possessed or even Death as well. Venom were the first extreme metal, even if not black metal. Obviously, without them there would be someone else. But still, they were the first, and Hellhammer and Bathory second.

I see where you're coming from, yet have to completely disagree on "modern" part. Almost all the "black metal" (some of them sound at best death/thrash) bands able to enjoy recognition in the so-called "underground" of today are deeply rooted in the '80's sound-wise, and that kind of "primordial extreme metal soup" is widely perceived as black metal proper nowadays (as if most of those albums weren't more important for the development of death metal). On the contrary to you, I'm almost afraid that black metal is about to completely discard all its achievements, lose all its genre-defining and aesthetical identity for the sake of "satanic deathrash", and eventually go backwards to (at best) the late '80's, to its embryonic stage.

Thanks, I'll give it a proper listen. Negative Plane and Funereal Presence sound quite interesting and refreshing on the first inspection, Very eclectic, and while black metal backbone is still recognizable imo, I admit it's gone a fair distance from what I used to consider modern black metal, no matter how broadly understood. However, to be honest, after your comment I was expecting to hear artists who are closer to black/death or war metal, heavily influenced by Sarcófago, Necrodeath, etc, or blackened speed/thrash imitating early Bathory or Hellhammer. Some people tend to refer this as "truest" black metal in my experience (retroactively and arrogantly so). Maybe I listened too little, but the first two bands from your list sound to me as if they were exploring something new actually, rather than going back to old ways.

While the Cronos stuff is immortal, the Tony Demolition era is insanely underrated.
