It's not often I like a cover more than the original but Mr. Cash achieved it here. The last few yrs of his life Johnny had the deep sorrow & poignancy in his voice. I think only Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Van Morrison are above him~

I love the Beatles, but this version has a level of poignancy that was not achieved in the original.

The Beatles are the #3 artist for me (really #1 if you consider all the listens pre Last.fm), but this is my favorite version of this song. To me it had to be sung from the point he was at to have the truthful ring to it, and he certainly gets that right. This song become special because it's beyond the normal scope of most songs it's about something that's so pure, IMO a pure untainted love. For me this is his ultimate goodbye song (though I haven't heard all of American VI yet), it's just so inexplicably emotional, kind of like a smiling sadness. I make movies for a living, and with this song images just come flying into my head, a tearful montage of a great man's life to a peaceful setting and then... Fade out.

Johnny Cash was like good wine - his music became riper and more tasteful (in some way) the older he became.

This was played at my baby son's funeral. His voice just carries the emotions we felt. I'll never be able to listen to this song without breaking down. The music says everything we couldn't...

Lovely cover, but not better than the Beatles. And Rahk-attack, it was largely a Lennon song... And Cash was a 70+ year old man singing this while Lennon was only 25, you have to take into account the people both John and Paul had lost so early in their lives, huge figures to both of them. This song means so much, no matter where you are in life. I'm only 19 and it's one of the most meaningful songs that I have ever encountered. Your life changes every day. Every day you can listen to this song, and still have it mean something new. Having said that. Both Johnny Cash and The Beatles were fucking geniuses. :) Thank you.
