The Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa, formerly known as Zaire) are neighboring countries with close musical ties. The genre known as soukous, sometimes called rumba or specifically African rumba, is widely performed in both Congos and has gained popularity throughout Africa. Both countries also have many folk music traditions deriving from various ethnic groups.
