Earth and the Velvets were already there. This is a term I've known for aeons but it seems underloved by journalists. I wouldn't include drone doom here beyond an aside, as drone rock has a certain definable sound to me (and dilution would only make this an even more obscure term) but it's a free country and any additions to the history would be welcome

A couple here I don't get such as The Black Lips. But some obvious choices are missing. For heavier doom-oriented stuff, you'd have to include Earth, Sleep, and Om. I'd also put a few post rock bands in this category for more atmospheric stuff ..like Shipping News, Lichens... And what I think is the godfather of all drone bands - Trad Gras Och Stenar (Trees Grass and Stone) from Sweden. They were playing with drone back when Velvet Underground was (also not mentioned) and to a much deeper, ruminating, expanded degree.
