Wiki

Dungeon sound is a subgenre of , defined by its dark and spatial sound pioneered by Youngsta, with its name being coined by Toast MC. The trend emerged from Youngsta and like-minded producers, such as LX One and SP:MC, as well as producers such as Kryptic Minds, making more skeletal tracks, with an emphasis on introducing lower-midrange and Reese basses, and darker atmospheres and textures to dubstep production. Songs would very often feature heavy, reverberated drum samples, tribal percussion rhythms, and sparse, echoing crawls of bass.

The scene would slowly build a foundation towards the end of the 2000s and the early 2010s. Labels like Tempa would release music from both veterans of the sound, as well as newer artists, such as J:Kenzo and Truth. The genre would prove to be polarizing within the dubstep community, with it drawing ire from some fans and artists who felt it was too over-saturated and formulaic. The sound would continue to be pushed in the 2010s through many imprints, such as Truth's Deep, Dark & Dangerous, Eddy Seven's Uprise Audio, and the popular blog-turned-label FatKidOnFire, with dungeon sound influencing many producers' releases on the labels. Kryptic Minds' own Leon Switch would be another producer continuing to push the genre, assisting up-and-coming producers, such as Kelly Dean and Kwizma, who he would go on to form the trio NōTaN with, as well as the label Kuro Records.
