To throw my hat into the ring I feel like Evanescence being tagged as goth rock is just not a good take and is a take made mostly by people who enjoy the look but don't delve much deeper beyond that. Goth rock isn't just rock by a band that looks goth its a genre in and of itself. Sure, post punk or 80's goth could cover some ground for what most fans of the genre would think of as being goth, it doesn't cover everything. There are a good amount of examples of what I consider to be goth artists who never touched post punk, and there are absolutely ways to make modern goth music without being heavily indebted to the 80's. Also not all post punk is goth. Evanescence shares more in common with other genres than with goth, and shouldn't be here. People who don't like Evanescence may be scared away from music they might like by music that they don't and Evanescence fans get a lot of music that doesn't sound like Evanescence what's the advantage for them being here

I actually like the idea of "Dark rock" tag to be used for Evanescence, HIM, post-Unforgiving Within Temtation, and the like. It would spare this bands (which are actually good) a lot of undeserved hate.

They use gothic so broadly that gothic rock is a theme and not a genre to them :/ Gothic rock is the goth genre's back bone- It's distinctly post punk and not these industrial, metal, or vaguely gothic aesthetics. It's hyper specific to the sound and artists IE: The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy division etc etc. And Evanescence has to be the biggest slap in the face to goths. I hate to be the angry goth, but I am. Sorry :(

Evane-scene doesn't belong here same with him and the 69 eyes. I can't stand the vocalist of Evane-scene but on that picture she has a nice ear. Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy are more correct under "gothic rock". They just sound completely different.
